How do we stop the school house to jailhouse trek?
Educators can make a difference!
How?
Will to make a change.
Skills needed include: Listening, Curiosity, Reflection, Courage to stand up, Collaboration
Teach like lives depend on it! They do!
Assume the kids you are teaching are your own kids.
10 Things we can do…
1. Strengthen your core
Make a core commitment for our work
Make sure our actions match our core
Look at our systems and interactions through a critical lens and ask questions!
2. Don’t Believe the Hype- stereotypes
Think about white privilege, cultural norms, racial bias, and be ok being ourselves
Affirm home language yet also prepare students for “other world”
How did policies, practices, and people help young people disengage with us? Develop authentic relationships with students being authentic self.
Notice your blind spots.
3. Watch Your Mouth
Have teacher videotape selves and reflect on based on Positive Behavior Intervention Strategies
How do I build positive, trusting relationships?
How do I teach or communicate expectations?
Who do I call on? Positive feedback vs. redirection
How do I redirect?
Are students treated equitably?
How do I increase engagement?
How do I use CLRT strategies?
4. Resist the Urge to Punish
Reduce - police presence
Transform - school climate and culture
Restore - Restorative Justice or Transformative Practices
Need Love, Justice & Joy
5. Say The Right Things
LOVE- “You cannot teach a child you do not love. You cannot teach a child you do not respect. You cannot teach a child you do not understand.”
Love is the action we take to enhance or alter the well-being of someone else
How can we show up each day to do love?
Amplify voice for our students!
6. Be A Student
Situate yourself to be a learner
What sets young folks souls on fire? Personalization, choice, interests
Learn from the kids and others.
7. Build on Assets and Contexts
Culturally relevant pedagogy
Culturally responsive pedagogy
Culturally sustainable pedagogy
8. Find Your People
Essential to do your work, do not do it alone!
9. Pick A Lane, and Go Hard
You can’t do everything but you can do something!
Start small.
What hits you at your gut- Do something!
10. Be Well
Take care of yourself.
11. Spread the Gospel
Share what we have learned!
Develop communities of practice
Spread learning with colleagues.
