April 10, 2019
Mike Walker- MPS

Kings and queens recognize- get back in their box and do job

Disrupt the status quo is hard, scary, and puts you at risk.

How do we support black boys?
  • Collective agreements of how our class will work with all voices involved
  • Explicit ways how we can talk without raising hand
Raise hand, relay, CLRT strategies (turn and talk, shout out)
  • Voice and choice in assignments and class- Personalization
  • Let the power go as a teacher/ administrator
  • Love and value and get to know all students as people with authentic relationships
  • Black teachers and administrators, not just behavior specialists
  • Fix the system that black boys live in
  • Change beliefs of students, educators, community, and parents
  • Support students in knowing self, character development, activism
  • Professional Learning
  • Authentic engagement/ relationships with black students and families
  • See these kids as your nieces and nephews- family
  • Class with teacher/ student mentors- weekly pull out
  • Curriculum needs to reflect positive black role models and history not just slavery
  • Bringing teacher and students cultures, leaning profile, behavior profile, goals together

  • Commitment to racial justice
  • VABB
